The over 50’s team did extremely well battling Glenhuntly throughout the season finally coming second. The three relays were the major difference in the two teams. The women had a solid season coming 10th out of 15 in a strong Division 3 with the men’s division 7 team managing 11th out of 29 teams.

The great team performances relied on depth and consistency of performance as well as commitment to turn up to as many of the 9 events as possible.

The stand out athletes for the club turning up to all events and always being the first three home for us in division five were Steve Quirk, Peter Cowell and Shane Drapper. Many other members such as Peter and Linda Black, Helen Stanley, Michael Camilleri, Sam Defanis and Ewen Wilson ran the majority of events for the season ensuring full teams and good results.

Our best overall performance for the year was in the 15K road race at Ballarat where we won the Men’s Div 5, Div 7 and 50+and came second in the women’s Div 3. An excellent performance. It shows what can be done when everyone gets out there and puts in.

Other members who put in during the season to make the season a great success were Rob Italia, Charles Chambers with Ray Wilson and Ralph Bennett making cameo appearances late in the season. Helen and Linda were ably supported through the season by Jeanne Byrne, Andrea Draper and Bronwyn Cardy on the comeback trail.

All those who participated give hearty and heart felt thanks to our tireless communicator (he doesn’t like being called manager) David Sheehan who has orchestrated the success over the last couple of seasons.

The current team members are looking forward to next year when some of the injured should be back on deck and hopefully we can encourage a few more members to join us to show the athletics community in general that the VMA can mix it in open comp
