The VMA 10 km road race, incorporating the 13th annual Eric Greaves memorial was held at Braeside Park on Sunday 24 July 2011 in conjunction with the Victorian Cross Country League. Eric was a much valued member of both clubs.Winner A-G Trophy Andrew Edwards

Light overnight rain which continued into the morning made conditions somewhat miserable and this would appear to have an effect on the number of entries particularly among the female ranks and younger men. In all a total of 51 Masters (44 males and 7 females) contested the event. Despite the rain leaving a few wet patches on the course there didn’t seem to be any serious effect on times in comparison with previous years.

The first male home was . . . Shane Draper (M35) in a respectable 37.03 with Andrew Edwards (M55) 37.43 and Steven Barker (M50) 38.14 showing good form. The leading female was Jenny Alexander (F50) in 45.37. Andrew’s time beat the previous best in his age group, previously held by Paul Twining. In the M80 division Bill Page beat the age group best time, previously held by long time rival Bob Lewis.M70 - 1st Ted Paulin, 2nd Barry Murley (Club Captain)

The best age graded performance went to Andrew Edwards with 86.96%. He has been in career best form over the last couple of years and is a deserved winner. Not far behind was the consistent Petrina Trowbridge (F60) with 85.98%.

In view of the miserable weather it was a delight to see Eric’s parents Ted (who recently turned 90) and Linda come along to present the medals. They were accompanied by his sister Marilyn and her husband Barry. And we must not forget Wendy who was a great support to Eric and also was a terrific worker for both clubs.

Specials thanks to the members of the Springvale/Noble Park venue who officiated on the day and ensured that the event ran smoothly.
