VMA’s Summer Shield teams returned to the track on 21 January.

The men’s and women’s teams each recorded solid second place finishes for the day, and lead their divisions with two rounds remaining.

Stewart Dobrzynski (100m, LJ 5m), Liz Feldman (2k walk) and Judy Pfanner (Javelin 28m) all recorded impressive wins, as did the mens 4x100m relay.

For the men, Nigel Cooper and Geoff Whitehall . . . sprinted well despite the efforts of a discouraging head wind, and Nigel put a 4m + Long Jump in the pit Alf Lendvai was our best thrower, Karl Thwaites was our quickest over the 400m, while Andrew Edwards and Colin Page were the best performed in the 1500m. Peter Black was the team’s better performer over the steeple chase, and Ralph Bennett was quicker in the 2k walk. Alan Lucas continued on the long walk to recovery from his recent heart surgery the best way he knows by walking the 2k.

The women’s team was down on usual numbers and did exceptionally well in fielding a relay team, and covering so many events on the day. For the women, Janet Holmes recorded the team’s best performances across the 100m, 400m, 1500m and Discus. Gwen Steed did well in the walk, and Marlene Gourlay ran a solid 400m. Celia Johnson might have some scores to settle next week, just pipped by Liz in the 100m, and Gwen in the Javelin. Judy recorded the team’s best long jump, as well as her win in the Javelin.

Extra thanks to everyone who helped Bronwen out with our duty on the day.
